2015 Portland Rose Festival Dragon Boat Races will take place this weekend, June 6-7, on the Willamette River, Tom McCall Waterfront Park in downtown Portland.

This exciting annual event has been hosted by the Portland-Koahsiung Sister City Association (PKSCA) and sanctioned by the Portland Rose Festival Foundation for 26 years.  Over 80 teams from all over the world compete each year racing in these colorful, Taiwan-style dragon boats.  Each boat carries 20 paddlers, 1 tiller, 1 caller, and 1 flag catcher required for each race heat. Teams are divided into high school, women, and mixed groups.  The time trials are held on Saturday and the finals on Sunday.  The race features four-team heats held every nine minutes.  The actual race consists of an all-out, 3-minute sprint with stroke counts for most teams between 70-80 strokes per minute.

This year I am particularly interested in watching the “Special Dragons”Team.  For the past 10 weeks one of our stellar Soldera Realtors, Brenda Gunderson, has been volunteering as an assistant coach at the rigorous practice/training sessions every Monday, Wednesday, and 7:30 a.m. on Sunday.  She is one of 6 assistants who volunteer their time helping the special needs team members with their equipment, timing, form, and getting in an out of the boat.  If you are watching the team on race day, Brenda will be in the lead seat.  Go Special Dragons!

The dragon boat race, free to all ages, is from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.  For more information check out the website at  www.rosefestival.org.
